The Hallelujah Hikers ventured into Idaho via Highway 12 last Wednesday. Heading towards Elk Summit, we had to leave the car due to so many downed trees across the road. Part of the hike was over crusty snow drifts. On our way back down to where Colt Killed Creek joins the Crooked Fork Creek to make up the Lochsa River, we rounded a bend in the road & startled a large cow moose who had been sunning herself in the road. In the 3-4 seconds it took for me to snatch up my camera, she had jumped up & bounded down the forested steep bank. What do you think we found in the Colt Killed Creek? Do any of you know what the contraption in the third photo does? We found out. I'd like you to try to guess before I tell you the answer.

Here's some guesses from Carol-Ann and Kinza as to what the contraption is:
a. a beaver dam smasher
b. an underwater cellar because there's a little lifty thingy that looks like a door to a compartment below.
c. it maps the floor of the creek
d. it collects specimens of water and plant life to study what is in the creek
e. it is a watercraft that the Hallelujah Hikers built to transport themselves over treacherous wilderness bogs!
What did you find in the creek? My guess is that digital camera you lost long ago! :0)
Wonderful & just too funny guesses, Carol-Ann & Kinza. What we found in the creek was the contraption. (The camera was lost on land returning from viewing a waterfall.) What a sharp memory you have to even remember that I lost that camera on a hike. Your answer is on your blog now...sort of a birthday gift, Kinza. Happy BD!

My answer is it must be part of a space shuttle that fell to the earth on burn out.It definately looks interesting.
A fishery is located on the banks near the formation of the Lochsa River. It uses this contraption to catch the fingerling trout & salmon. We visited the fishery after our hike & asked all our questions. The fishery staff had seen a large bull moose in the area, but had not seen the cow moose which we saw.
